THE TREATMENT

Manual lymph drainage is not a massage, it is a body treatment. There are no deep strokes, no firm pressure, no kneading or manipulation of muscle tissue. Instead, it uses feather-light, rhythmic movements — no more than skin deep — to stimulate the lymphatic system: your body's built-in network for clearing waste, fighting infection, and reducing fluid buildup.

At Mellow & Mend in Mentor, Ohio, I perform full body lymphatic drainage using the Vodder technique — the gold standard in manual lymph drainage. A complete intake form is required before your session, and your health history will be reviewed to ensure this treatment is appropriate for your body.

THE TECHNIQUE

why
Vodder?

Developed by Dr. Emil and Estrid Vodder in 1930s France, the Vodder method is the most rigorously researched and widely respected approach to manual lymph drainage in the world. Vodder certification requires a specialized training program — not an hour course — ensuring the technique is applied with the precision and anatomical knowledge it demands.

The technique works with the skin rather than on it, using four specific hand movements applied in a precise, rhythmic sequence along the body's lymphatic pathways.

01

STATIONARY CIRCLES

Circular movements applied in place, used primarily over lymph nodes to clear the pathway before fluid is moved toward it.

02

THE PUMP TECHNIQUE

An oval-shaped pumping stroke used on the limbs to encourage lymph flow along the vessels toward lymph node clusters.

03

THE ROTARY TECHNIQUE

A spiral movement applied to flat areas of the body — the chest, back, abdomen — moving fluid across broader surfaces.

04

THE SCOOP TECHNIQUE

A scooping motion used on the arms and legs to move fluid proximally — toward the body's lymph node centers.

YOUR FIRST VISIT

what to expect

01

COMPLETE YOUR INTAKE FORM

Manual lymph drainage has specific contraindications. Before booking, you'll complete a thorough intake form. Kristen reviews every form personally. If there are any questions about your eligibility, she'll reach out before your session.

02

ARRIVE HYDRATED

Drink water before your session — hydration supports lymph flow. Eat light, and skip the heavy meals beforehand. No oils or lotions on your skin; the Vodder technique is performed directly on bare skin for optimal contact.

03

LIGHTER THAN YOU'D EXPECT

The pressure is genuinely light. Most clients are surprised by how gentle it feels and how much still happens. Many fall asleep. After your session, you may feel sinus drainage, a deep calm, or notice you need to urinate more — all signs the lymphatic system is moving.

questions
answered

  • Manual lymph drainage (MLD) is a specialized technique that uses very light, rhythmic pressure to stimulate the lymphatic system — your body's built-in network for clearing waste, fighting infection, and managing fluid balance. Unlike traditional massage, it works at the surface of the skin, not on the muscles beneath it. The result is a deeply calming session that supports your body's ability to detox and regulate itself.

  • The Vodder method is the most rigorously trained and researched approach to MLD. It uses four specific hand movements applied in a precise sequence along the lymphatic pathways, with a constant shift in pressure that encourages the lymph vessels themselves to contract and pump. Vodder certification is a specialized technique and requires a rigorous training program.

  • Not at all. MLD is one of the gentlest forms of bodywork you can receive — the pressure goes no deeper than the skin itself. Most clients are surprised by how light it is, and many fall asleep during the session. If you're expecting something that feels like a traditional massage, this will feel very different — in a good way.

  • Most clients feel deeply relaxed, sometimes lighter or less puffy, and occasionally notice a mild tingling or warmth as the lymphatic system activates. It's common to need to urinate more in the hours following a session — that's your body moving fluid the way it's meant to. Drink plenty of water afterward, eat light, and avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day.

  • Fill out your intake form completely and honestly — that's the most important thing you can do. Kristen reviews every form before your session. If there are any questions about your health history or eligibility, she'll contact you directly. Some conditions require a doctor's note, some require modifying the treatment, and some prevent lymph drainage entirely. If you're unsure, ask — there's no wrong question.
